Conventions

1. Checkback (111NT2)

Asks opener to support with 3 cards in that suit; bid 2 with 4 cards in that suit; otherwise bid 2, or 2NT if maximum.

2. Roman Key Card (RKC 1430)

4NT asks for controls after a suit is agreed. Controls include the king of the agreed suit. Responses:

  • 5 — 1 or 4
  • 5 — 0 or 3
  • 5 — 2
  • 5 — 2 and the trump queen

3. Gerber

4 over a NT opener or rebid — ace-asking, standard responses.

Leading styles

Second and fourth: lead the 4th highest from a suit with an honour, 2nd highest from an empty suit.

  • The lead of an Ace or Queen asks for attitude.
  • The lead of a King asks for count.
  • The lead of a 10 has three possible meanings: a doubleton, top of a sequence, or two non-touching honours (e.g. AJ10x).

Carding & discards

  • Following suit: reverse attitude, natural count.
  • Discards: reverse attitude.
